Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

The programme offers an opportunity to teach English as a second language. It will be of interest to those who have no teaching experience and also to those who wish to update their classroom skills; it is one of very few postgraduate TESOL courses in the UK which offers an overseas teaching practice placement (six weeks in Hungary teaching in state primary or secondary schools); the course takes place on the Coleraine campus and aims at excellence in practical teaching as well as preparing students to proceed successfully to the Master�s degree by dissertation.

Entry requirements

Diploma in teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) or in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) at an acceptable standard or equivalent required for MA, degree in English or in a modern foreign language or other relevant subject, or teaching qualification with at least 2 years' teaching experience required for Postgraduate Diploma; experience of teaching will be considered an advantage.

Course modules

Subjects include: language teaching across cultures, grammar, phonetics and pronunciation, research methods; full-time students normally spend a 6 week period of teaching practice abroad in Hungary during the second semester; part-time students undertake their teaching practice in Northern Ireland.

Assignments, presentations, portfolios, case studies and action research projects and class tests.
