This course gives design professionals and graduates the opportunity to deepen skills and experience in the areas of forgework, foundry work and metalsmithing. The course is for highly motivated and talented people who wish to work at the forefront of their creative discipline. It is a project-led and studio-based course with close tutorial guidance. Rigorous research encourages students to explore a wide range of approaches, from traditional to contemporary influences of art, craft, design and technology.

Entry requirements

A good Honours degree (normally 2.1 or above) or equivalent qualification in a chosen subject or a related discipline, and/or relevant work experience, demonstrating the ability to study at postgraduate level. Applicants may be invited to interview and to present a portfolio of work. Applicants whose 1st language is not English require IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum 5.5 in each component) or equivalent.

Course modules

Stage 1: studio practice, theory and analysis; exploratory practice. Stage 2: reflective practice; exploratory practice. Stage 3: final project.

Assessment methods

Both your practical work and theoretical writing is assessed. This may include essays, presentations, research papers or catalogues, research journals and sketch books, tests and experimentations.
