Creative Arts Education

This course is for staff in Further Education (FE) or Higher Education (HE) institutions who are new or fairly new to teaching (have less than 3 years full-time (equivalent) experience) or who are in supporting learning roles including: learning support assistants, technical support, learning and teaching librarians, artists in residence, graduate teaching assistants and PhD students.

Entry requirements

Consideration will be given to other applicants (employed in FE or HE contexts in teaching/supporting learning roles) with a lower degree classification or level but can make a strong case for admission. Such applicants will be offered an opportunity to demonstrate ability to study at this level. A joint decision will be made between the participant, their line manager (if UCA applicant) and the Graduate Certificate Course Leader whether it is appropriate for them to join the course. 1 day a week or equivalent (minimum) of work in a teaching/supporting learning role at UCA or other Further Education and Skills and/or Higher Education establishment. In some instances this requirement for teaching experience may be provided through 1 day per week of voluntary (unpaid) teaching support for UCA, subject to satisfactory interview with the relevant UCA manager or course leader.

Course modules

Topics include: how learners learn in general and in creative arts subjects; how to develop an inclusive approach to teaching/supporting student learning; how to develop robust assessment, feedback and evaluation practice.

Assessment methods

Each unit is assessed through the submission of a range of tasks whereby theory is used to inform the development of good practice that is appropriate for the discipline/professional support context and level.
