Product Design

This course provides a conceptual process and context for the development of creative and innovative products, which includes the study of socio-cultural and economic issues; new technologies; and creative visual language in relation to the student's practice. Students undertake individual research projects using an integrated product design process. They also develop and communicate design solutions which align with design criteria and respond to broader issues such as lifestyles, markets or the information economy.

Entry requirements

A good Honours degree (normally 2.1 or above) or equivalent qualification in a chosen subject or a related discipline, and/or Relevant work experience, demonstrating the ability to study at postgraduate level. Applicants may be invited to interview and asked to present a portfolio of work. Applicants whose 1st language is not English require IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum 5.5 in each component) or equivalent.

Course modules

Stage 1 studio practice, theory and analysis; exploratory practice. Stage 2: product development. Stage 3: final project.

Assessment methods

Students are assessed on their major project thesis which includes product development work in collaboration with an industry partner. The thesis could take a number of formats, including: essays, presentations and research papers; conceptual development in models and drawings; and prototyping work in innovation and consumer products.
