Professional Communication

MSc Professional Communication at University of Aberdeen provides in depth communications knowledge across business, law, health care, politics, media and energy industries globally. Centred on Linguistics this programme features both language analysis and discourse analysis - together with research, methodology techniques that help uncover the true meaning in data. The programme draws upon the Business School and School of Language and Literature so it provides a unique perspective to give a fuller picture rather than one aspect or the other. The MSc Professional Communication gives you key skills in all organisational communication across sectors nationally and internationally to enable you to travel globally in your career. The breadth of skills provided by the subject allows you to work in internal and external facing positions within an organisation of any size or type.

Entry requirements

The standard entrance requirement is normally at a 2.1 or above in language, linguistics, business studies, law or legal studies. Or a degree in another subject with working experience in, for example, the energy industry, law or law enforcement, medicine or life sciences and who are interested in the role of communication in professional contexts. Foreign-language students need a minimum of IELTS at 6.5 (6.0 for writing), or an equivalent score on an internationally recognised English test with above-average competence in English language. Previous study of language and linguistics is desirable. Applicants with non-standard qualifications will also be considered, though it is expected that the majority of students will be recent graduates from Britain or overseas.

Course modules

Semester 1: communication theory and analysis; marketing management; interpersonal management, negotiation and persuasion. Semester 2: institutional discourse leadership, teams and conflict resolution; intercultural communication. Choose 1 of the following options: healthcare communication; business model innovation; marketing communication; leadership challenge; English for academic purposes. Summer Term: dissertation in professional communication based on an area of your choice e.g: legal communication; healthcare communication; political discourse; business and management.

Assessment methods

Courses are assessed through essays, presentations, group and project work.
