International Law

The programme offers a range of courses covering both public and private international law. It enables students to undertake advanced legal research and writing in this field and educates students in the analysis of international treaties and case law with an international law dimension.

Entry requirements

A 2:1 Honours degree in Law, or another related discipline, or equivalent. The English Language Requirement for all College of Arts and Social Sciences Masters programmes is an IELTS of 6.5 with 6.0 in the writing and reading (or equivalent TOEFL iBT or PTE).

Course modules

Modules include: Critical legal thinking and scholarship; critical legal thinking and scholarship; dissertation; oil and minerals for good; energy, innovation and law; the politics of human rights; international commercial arbitration; international commercial arbitration in Asia pacific; private international law: concepts and institutions; comparative and international insolvency law; world trade organisation: GATT; cultural property issues: law, art and property.

Assessment methods

Assessment is based on a combination of written examination at the end of the relevant semester and one or more course essays. In addition, students must complete a course in research skills and a dissertation on a topic within the specialism. The dissertation is planned and written between March and August each year. Guidance on the writing of a dissertation will be given.
