Politics and International Relations

Research interests cover: security studies: European security, the Middle East, defence expenditure, arms control and balance of power, military space policy; public policy: next steps and market testing developments, local government reform, post-privatisation developments; parties, elections and interest groups: political participation, ranging from parties and electoral politics in France, development of party system in Scotland, role and nature of campaigning groups, issues of party 'decline' and 'party systems change'; Nordic politics: regional policy development in northern peripheral areas, Nordic states and European integration; party politics and legislative systems of the region; European integration: controversial issues of the power of European Union institutions, democratisation in post-Soviet republics; theories of politics and international relations: globalisation, development of the international political system, nature of international society, normative theories; security studies; other areas of research may be supervised by arrangement.

Entry requirements

2nd Class Honours degree; or equivalent in relevant subject. Applicants to the PhD and MRes must provide a detailed research proposal and 2 academic references from their most recent academic institution. Applicants are strongly advised to contact potential supervisors before making an application. Applicants who have been educated in the medium of English are still required to meet the English language requirements (certain countries may be exempted from this requirement). This programme requires that applicants meet the 'postgraduate standard' level of English proficiency. Applicants who are in doubt about their proficiency in English should contact the British Council office or its equivalent in their country. For applicants whose 1st language is not English, it is important that their proficiency in English is good in order for them to study successfully at the University.
