Strategic Studies and International Law
The course aims to analyse and explain how the modern uses of force and power interface with the requirements and expectations of that body of international law which addresses the conduct of conflict at international and sub-national levels. Students will also learn to combine an understanding of the theory and practice of the uses of power and force by states to achieve national and international security objectives with an appreciation of the development and implementation of international law as it attempts to control coercion and to limit violence in the international arena.
Normally an upper 2nd Class Honours degree or equivalent in international relations, politics, economics, law, geography, history or cognate disciplines, or relevant professional experience (for example work for NGOs, the civil service, the military, the international media). Prospective applicants who are unsure about their eligibility are encouraged to address an informal inquiry to the programme director. English proficiency is required.
In 1st semester there are 2 compulsory taught modules: Strategic theory; the evolution of international law in a world of crises. In 2nd semester, candidates may select 1 from a choice of: Global security issues; strategic nuclear doctrines; Latin America (security conditions and challenges). Summer (June September): Strategic studies dissertation (12,000 15,000 words).
Assessment is by a combination of essay work, class presentations, examination, and dissertation.
