Applied Economics

The programmes aim to provide students with in-depth and extensive critical knowledge at the forefront of both economic and econometric theory. It seeks to develop the students' analytical skills enabling graduates to study complex real-world problems. In the first term, students develop their core skills in economics and econometric methods, with a focus using these skills to help evaluate and guide decision making and policy in government and industry. In the second term, the programme allows the student to specialize in at least two areas of applied economics, broadening and deepening their understanding of key current economic issues, while developing their abilities to undertake relevant economic and econometric analyses. In the final term, during the dissertation students apply the skills developed within the taught programme to a real world economic problem. Opportunities will exist for students to undertake their dissertations in association with government policy makers. The Pathway in Health Economics combines a strong background in economic and economic policy with a specialisation in the economics of health. The pathway will draw on expertise from the Health Economics Research Unit (HERU) at Aberdeen which is one of the leading centres in health economics in Europe.
