University of Aberdeen
A good Honours degree; a good Master's degree in a relevant subject area. Applicants who have been educated in the medium of English are still required to meet the English language requirements (certain countries may be exempted from this requirement). This programme requires that applicants meet the 'Postgraduate Standard' level of English proficiency. Applicants who are in doubt about their proficiency in English should contact the British Council office or its equivalent in their country. For applicants whose 1st language is not English, it is important that their proficiency in English is good in order for them to study successfully at the University.
A PhD is a Doctorate of Philosophy, a prestigious qualification that demonstrates talent, academic excellence and a thirst for knowledge. It usually culminates in a thesis based on research carried out over the course of 3-4 years. The research must "make a distinct contribution to knowledge and afford evidence of originality as shown by the exercise of independent critical powers". There are no formal lectures or seminars but students' work will be periodically qualitatively monitored by the Graduate School.
