Reservoir Engineering

This programme provides graduate engineers, geologists, and other scientists with specialist knowledge and understanding of the geology, performance and management of hydrocarbon reservoirs. The courses which make up this programme cover the fundamental science and technology of reservoir engineering, reservoir modelling and flow simulation, petrophysics, formation evaluation, and petroleum economics. A group design exercise provides students with an opportunity to apply a range of concepts to the appraisal of a prospect and selection of appropriate technologies and solutions for viable development and management of oil and gas fields. The group design exercise and a 15 week individual project enhance transferrable skills in presentation, report writing, organisation, project management and team-work. Our close working relationship with local industry ensures you are given the opportunity to visit industrial facilities and receive technical presentations by working professionals, to provide further practical exposure and awareness of professional and social responsibility. Wider societal topics such ethics, sustainability and environmental issues are covered in the taught courses as appropriate.

Entry requirements

A 2.1 in an engineering or a geology degree which includes geophysics as well as proven maths ability.

Course modules

Semester 1: fundamentals of petroleum geoscience; petrophysics, core analysis and formation evaluation; reservoir engineering; introduction to energy economics. Semester 2: reservoir sedimentology and structure; reservoir simulation b; group project and research skills. For master's candidates only: project in reservoir engineering.

Assessment methods

By written examination, continuous assessment and course work as prescribed for each course. In addition, MSc candidates must submit a dissertation on their individual project.
