Most students are registered in the 1st instance for the degree of MPhil. Students are expected to carry out supervised research at the leading edge of their chosen subject, which must then be written up as a substantial thesis. The transfer from MPhil to PhD is subject to students passing an assessment process, which normally involves submission of written work and an oral examination, usually within 12 months of registration.
1st or a good 2nd Class Honours degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate subject. Minimum requirements for non-graduates are passes at a satisfactory level in institution of chemical engineers part 3 exam or membership of recognised professional institutions of at least graduate status or a relevant professional qualification acceptable to the board of studies and extended and responsible experience at an appropriate standard in a relevant field acceptable to the board of studies. Where English is not a 1st language: IELTS: 6.5 (at least 6.0 in each of the 4 components) or equivalent.
All research students attend skills training courses on a number of subjects, including: Creative thinking and problem solving; speed reading; making presentations; communications skills; research in a commercial environment; project management; there is also the chance to earn money by undertaking part-time teaching in the department.
