University of Bath
Electronic and Electrical Engineering
Most students are registered in the first instance for the degree of MPhil; students are expected to carry out supervised research at the leading edge of their chosen subject, which must then be written up as a substantial thesis; the transfer from MPhil to PhD is subject to students passing an assessment process which involves submission of written work and an oral examination; the final stage of the PhD degree is the oral or viva voce examination, in which students are required to defend the thesis to a board of examiners.
UK 1st or good 2nd Class Honours degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate subject; the minimum non graduate qualifications acceptable for admission to the MPhil are: membership by examination of a recognised professional institution of at least associate or graduate status; or a recognised college diploma or service college qualification; (a) or (b) above to be coupled with either: at least 2 years relevant experience in industry, in teaching or in a government establishment; or the successful completion of a preliminary course acceptable to the board of studies. Where English is not a first language: IELTS 6.5 (at least 6.0 in each of the four components); or a minimum of 62 in PTE Academic (with no less than 59 in each component).
Electronic and electrical engineering includes a number of fascinating research challenges. It covers areas such as: Electrical power and energy systems; microelectronics and optoelectronics; biosensors and bioengineering; remote sensing in space and atmospheric applications; imaging and tomography.
