Electrical Power Systems

This course gives our students the skills and specialist experience required to significantly enhance their career in the electrical power industry. The programme builds on a long-term involvement with the power industry, the education of power engineers and extensive research work and expertise within the Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering.

Entry requirements

1st degree (at UK 1st or 2nd Class or equivalent) in electronic engineering, telecommunications, physics or mathematics; the minimum non graduate qualifications acceptable for admission: membership by examination of a recognised professional institution of at least associate or graduate status; or a recognised college diploma or service college qualification; (a) or (b) above to be coupled with either: at least 2 years relevant experience in industry, in teaching or in a government establishment; or the successful completion of a preliminary course acceptable to the board of studies. Where English is not a first language: IELTS 6.5 (at least 6.0 in each of the four components); or a minimum of 62 in PTE Academic (with no less than 59 in each component).

Course modules

Compulsory Units: Energy management systems; power system protection; control of power systems; electrical energy systems and analysis; engineering project management; group activity; project unit 1 project scoping and literature review; project unit 2 project implementation and completion; plus optional units: Fundamentals of electromagnetic compatibility; power electronics and machines; power system plant; power markets and economics.

Assessment methods

Assessment includes: Coursework involving laboratory or small project sessions; report writing; laboratory results processing and revision for examinations; project-based learning environment; group projects; individual project preliminary work; individual project leading to MSc dissertation; end-of-course written examinations.
