Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

This is a specialist degree for aspiring professionals who wish to enhance their career prospects in the field of teaching of English as a 2nd, foreign or additional language. It helps students with the tools and resources they need in order to develop their teaching skills, reflect upon their professional practice and conduct their own research. Particular emphasis is placed on helping students to develop appropriate methods and materials to suit their social and cultural context. Programme features: A highly competitive programme that integrates the latest developments in TESOL research and practice; suitable for pre and post experience participants; opportunity to share experience with educators from a range of backgrounds and to establish an international network of professional contacts; specialised academic writing and study skills courses; the opportunity to combine study for the MA TESOL with a globally recognised Cambridge ESOL qualification; credits equivalent to 2 MA units offered to students who already hold either a Cambridge ESOL Delta or a Trinity College London Diploma in TESOL (DipTESOL).

Entry requirements

Academic requirements: A good undergraduate degree (1st or 2.1 Honours degree, or equivalent) in an appropriate subject, from a recognised university. English Language requirements: IELTS 7.0 (with no less than 6.5 in each of the 4 components); PTE Academic 69 with no less than 62 in any component. If applicants wish to improve their English proficiency before commencing studies, pre sessional language training can be arranged through the English Language Centre. 1 academic reference is required.

Course modules

Semester 1: research methods for 2nd language education 1; 2nd language acquisition; language awareness. Semester 2: research methods for 2nd language education 2; language teaching methodology and curriculum; teaching and assessing English as an international language; dissertation.

Assessment methods

Assessment is by written assignments. These include language analysis, learner needs analysis, textbook and test design, and case studies of language learners in institutional settings.
