Translation and Professional Language Skills
1st or 2.1 Honours degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate subject, from a recognised university; English as the 1st language (candidates with English as their 1st language are those who have completed primary and secondary education in an English speaking country. Other criteria may be applied on a case by case basis, such as bi-lingual ability). Applicants need to offer 1 or 2 of the languages taught in the Department (French, German, Italian, Russian or Spanish). 2 references are required. At least 1 of these must be an academic reference.
Semester 1: core modules: editing and revision; professional translation. Optional modules: proofreading; translation management; public speaking. Semester 2: core modules: editing and revision; professional translation. Optional modules: précis writing for UN; enterprise skills; using technology in the T and I Industry; public service interpreting; 15,000 word thesis: annotated translation or a project type.
Assessment consists of a combination of coursework essays, class exercises, translations, projects, oral presentations and examinations.
