International Security

This programme is designed to train graduates pursuing international careers in administration, diplomacy, policy formation and research. It will provide students with a broad and in depth understanding of the new international security environment of the post Cold War era. The programme offers a distinctive focus on security issues, with academic expertise in both international security and European homeland security. Students will gain an insight into the interplay of international power, order and institutions.

Entry requirements

A good undergraduate degree (1st or 2.1 Honours degree, or equivalent) in an appropriate subject, from a recognised university. In addition, the following will also be taken into account: extended and responsible experience in a relevant field in commerce, or industry, or in teaching, or in a government establishment, together with authorship of papers or other work of an acceptable academic standard, e.g. published translation. English language requirements: IELTS 6.5 (with not less than 6.0 in each of the 4 components); PTE Academic of 62 with no less than 59 in any component. References: 2 references are required. At least 1 of these must be an academic reference.

Course modules

Core units: international security, theories and concepts; international security: the contemporary agenda; scopes and methods of politics and international relations; dissertation. Optional units: international organisations in world politics; foreign policy making and analysis; international terrorism; international relations theories; European security; European foreign policy; national security of the UK: policy, strategy and practice; the politics of sustainability: environmental security and international relations; the politics of migration; organised crime in Europe: threats and challenges; memory culture: memory politics; multilevel governance and multi layered citizenship in Europe; Britain and Europe.

Assessment methods

Assessment consists of a combination of coursework essays, class exercises, projects, oral presentations and examinations.
