International Relations

The programme offers a distinctive focus on international relations issues, with academic expertise in both international security and European homeland security. Students will gain an insight into the interplay of international power, order and institutions.

Entry requirements

A good undergraduate degree (1st or 2.1 Honours degree, or equivalent) in an appropriate subject, from a recognised university. In addition, the following will also be taken into account: extended and responsible experience in a relevant field in commerce, or industry, or in teaching, or in a government establishment, together with authorship of papers or other work of an acceptable academic standard, e.g. published translation. English anguage requirements: IELTS 6.5 (with no less than 6.0 in each of the four components); PTE Academic of 62 with no less than 59 in any component. References: 2 references are required, at east 1 of which must be an academic reference.

Course modules

Core units: international relations theories; scopes and methods of politics and international relations; foreign policy making and analysis; international organisations in world politics; international relations Master's dissertation. Optional units: comparative European politics; international security: theories and concepts; memory culture (memory politics); governance, security and development in East and South East Asia; organised crime in Europe (threats and challenges); international security (the contemporary agenda); Britain and Europe; international relations of South and Central Asia; economic foreign policy and the international trade regime; theories of conflict and conflict resolution.

Assessment methods

Assessment consists of a combination of coursework essays, class exercises, projects, oral presentations and examinations.
