Translation with Business Interpreting (Chinese)

This programme is for Chinese students with an existing high level of competence of English translation. It will allow students to develop specialist translation and interpreting skills, working in both Chinese and English. Students will be trained to provide specialist language services in a variety of contexts, but particularly in the world of business. It will teach students how to use the latest translation management software and will develop enterprise skills suitable for professional translators and interpreters working in China, the UK and beyond. There are international placement opportunities made available during semester 2. Students are able to visit the language services of international organisations, government departments and commercial enterprises in order to gain insights into working practice.

Entry requirements

1st or 2.1 Honours degree (or equivalent) from a recognised university. Applicants will be required to take written tests to establish their level of linguistic ability in both languages before being offered a place on the programme. IELTS 7.5 (with not less than 7.0 in the writing component and not less than 6.5 in each of the reading, speaking and listening components); PTE Academic of 76 (with not less than 69 in the writing component and not less than 62 in each of the reading, speaking and listening components). 2 references are required. 1 of these must be an academic reference.

Course modules

Semester 1: liaison interpreting for business; Chinese to English translation 1; English to Chinese translation 1; management and enterprise skills for translators and interpreters. Semester 2: liaison interpreting for business; Chinese to English translation 2; English to Chinese translation 2; using technology in the translation industry; advanced translation for business.

Assessment methods

The programme is assessed by a combination of coursework and examinations.
