Environment, Energy and Resilience

This programme engages the latest critical thinking on risk management, critical infrastructure, public regulation, policy studies and the environmental sciences. On completion of this programme, students are able to demonstrate: A critical understanding of research based literature on environment and energy across a range of disciplines; comprehension of the relationships between theory and practice in the related fields of environment, energy and resilience; thorough and in depth understanding of key debates relating to environmental challenges, energy resource use and security, and the resilience and adaptability of human systems; and detailed and comprehensive understanding of current issues in the disciplines within the theme of environment and energy studies. The programme equips students for careers as professional researchers in either academic or non-academic environments, by developing core research skills. Students are encouraged to review and critically evaluate approaches to research and their application, and to identify and investigate their own original research questions.

Entry requirements

1st or 2.1 Honours degree (or equivalent) in a social science subject or a related field. English language requirements: IELTS 7.0 (with not less than 6.5 in each of the 4 components); PTE Academic of 69 with no less than 62 in any component. References: 2 references are required, at least 1 of these must be an academic reference.

Course modules

Modules include: contemporary debates about energy consumption, environmental uncertainties, sustainability and resilience; short research apprenticeship project; quantitative methods 1 (introduction to quantitative methods); qualitative methods 1; principles and skills of social research; environmental regulation; director of studies approved unit; long research apprenticeship project; interdisciplinary research design; quantitative methods 2; qualitative methods 2; independent research essay; environmental and resource economics; director of studies approved unit; dissertation.
