Security, Conflict and Justice

The programme equips students for careers as professional researchers in either academic or non academic environments, by developing core research skills. Students are encouraged to review and critically evaluate approaches to research and their application, and to identify and investigate their own original research questions.

Entry requirements

1st or 2.1 Honours degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate subject, from a recognised university; or an equivalent degree in another subject, together with substantial relevant work experience. English Language requirements: IELTS 7.0 (with no less than 6.5 in each of the 4 components) or PTE Academic of 69 with no less than 62 in any component. References: 2 references are required. At least 1 of these must be an academic reference.

Modules include: short research apprenticeship project; quantitative methods 1; qualitative methods 1; principals and skills of social research; conceptual issues in security, conflict and justice; international security: theories and concepts; European security; advanced policy analysis; the politics of policy in international perspective: actors, arenas and conflict; long research apprenticeship project; interdisciplinary research design; quantitative methods 2; qualitative methods 2; independent research essay; international security: the contemporary agenda; political economy of globalisation; World politics: conflict, security and development; organised crime in Europe: threats and challenges; ethics and public policy; contemporary issues in South Asian development; contemporary issues in African development; Latin America regional research specialism; dissertation.
