This programme places great emphasis on a sound theoretical foundation for analysing financial decisions; this enables students to gain an in depth knowledge of the operations of the financial system and the motivations of the people making financial decisions. It allows students to apply knowledge in a wide range of real world scenarios; combining the research and teaching expertise of other leading departments (the department of mathematical sciences and the department of economics and international development). The programme ensures that students have access to a wide range of experts from across a broad spectrum of knowledge.

Entry requirements

A good undergraduate degree (2.1 or above or its international equivalent) in a subject with a high mathematical/quantitative content. Subjects meeting these requirements are engineering, mathematics, economics, or physics. Other subjects may be considered if quantitative modules have been studied in sufficient depth. This programme is open to graduates who currently have little or no business experience. There is a £60 application fee. Candidates whose 1st language is not English will normally require an IELTS score of 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in each of the 4 components. 1 academic reference is required.

Course modules

Semester 1: econometrics for economics and finance; theory of financial decision making; banking. Optional modules: financial derivatives; investment management; introduction to quantitative finance; corporate governance. Semester 2: financial econometrics; financial engineering; corporate finance; dissertation. Optional modules: international finance; risk management; financial statement analysis; contemporary finance issues.
