Middle Years (Key Stages 2-3, Mathematics)
This course fully prepares you to teach the 7-14 age range (Key Stages 2/3). You acquire the skills and experience to become a general teacher at Key Stage 2 and a specialist mathematics teacher at Key Stage 3. Teaching is delivered through a blend of lectures, seminars, workshops and collaborative and independent learning approaches. However, the focus is predominantly professional as you undertake 3 placements in different schools, amounting to at least 120 days of practical experience. You work with students aged 7-14 and progress from observing classes, to undertaking small amounts of teaching, to finally completing a substantial amount of teaching within your school placements.
2nd Class Honours degree with substantial mathematics content. GCSE grade C (or equivalent) English, mathematics and science in place at the time of application. Recent and relevant mainstream UK school experience. Criminal Records Bureau check, medical check and interview. Students who do not have GCSE grade C in English need to have average score of 6.0 IELTS, including an individual score of at least 6.0 in each of the 4 areas.
Organisation and management of teaching and learning for middle years; KS2 core and foundation subject development; subject enhancement and understanding of KS3 mathematics; the role of the teacher within the school and the wider children's workforce; self-reflection and personal career development.
There are no formal examinations and the continuous assessment is based on achieving the national standards for Qualified Teacher Status specified in the most recent government documentation.
