Education (Leadership and Management)

This course helps students to develop the skills and knowledge to effectively make informed decisions about how to progress the department or the school; it also enhances continuous professional development and supports the development of a career should they wish to seek management or headship positions; the course has a flexible approach and enables students to organise their studies to suit their own career development and focus on an area of personal interest; the course comprises a mandatory research methods in education module and a dissertation linked to each students' chosen Master's in Education pathway; each student is also given the opportunity to develop research in the area of leadership and management; in addition to the possibility of working with groups in the workplace, students may also accredit professional qualifications against their Master's degree credit, to a maximum of 50 per cent of the course.

Entry requirements

A good Honours degree or equivalent; or substantial experience in an appropriate educational or related field; access to an educational setting in order to complete assessments; working within a specific role within an organisation and therefore some optional units are not appropriate.

Course modules

Core: Dissertation (leadership and management); research methods in education; strategic leadership and management. Optional: Reflecting on professional practice; inclusive education; special educational needs and disability; understanding pupil behaviour in schools; addressing challenging pupil behaviour in schools; managing learning and teaching; evolving theories of autism; exploring coaching and mentoring; international and comparative education; understanding difficulties in literacy development and dyslexia.

Assessment methods

Assignments and a dissertation.
