Education (Special Educational Needs)

This Master's degree in education helps students develop the skills and knowledge to effectively make informed decisions about how to progress the department or the school; it also enhances continuous professional development and support the development of a career should students wish to seek management or headship positions; during this course students benefit from the opportunity for professional progression in education, either in classroom practice or educational leadership; are able to study part-time to fit in with existing work commitments; gain the chance to tailor the course to suit their individual needs and preferences; develop their practice with the support of a motivated and experienced postgraduate team; and specialise in special educational needs.

Entry requirements

A good Honours degree or equivalent; or substantial experience in an appropriate educational or related field; access to an educational setting in order to complete assessments; working within a specific role within an organisation and therefore some optional units are not appropriate.

Course modules

Core modules: Research methods in education. Optional modules: Introduction to special educational needs co-ordination; further development of special educational needs co-ordination; understanding difficulties in literacy development and dyslexia; addressing difficulties in literacy development and dyslexia; understanding pupil behaviour in schools; addressing challenging pupil behaviour in schools; inclusive education; special educational needs and disability; evolving theories of autism; reflecting on professional practice; strategic leadership and management; managing learning and teaching; exploring coaching and mentoring; international and comparative education.

Assessment methods

Assignments and a dissertation.
