Physical Activity, Nutrition and Health Promotion

This course is designed to help students pursue careers within the health sector and the health and fitness industry; it is particularly relevant to graduates in the fields of sport and exercise science; sport and physical education; health psychology; exercise and health; biological sciences; physiotherapy and nursing; and nutrition. The course especially emphasises the role of physical activity; nutrition; health psychology; and professional communication in the promotion of health within a variety of population and patient groups.

Entry requirements

A good Honours degree, normally in a related discipline; all applicants are considered on an individual basis and on the merit of previous experience and qualifications; a sample of students' writing required on application; IELTS 6 or TOEFL 650 or approved equivalent.

Course modules

Compulsory modules: research methods; professional skills for health care providers; psychological approaches to public health; metabolic health; physical activity, nutrition and health promotion dissertation; exercise prescription for clinical populations. Optional modules: placement (long or short); exercise testing and diagnosis; laboratory skills; cardiopulmonary exercise testing and interpretation.

Assessment methods

Essay writing; critical appraisals of the scientific literature; case study reports; examinations; research portfolios and projects; practical examinations; presentations.
