Advanced Nursing Studies

This course has been designed to enable students to build on their existing knowledge base, and be more confident with complex decision-making skills and clinical competencies for expanded practice; it integrates research, education and management issues to enable a high degree of professional autonomy and independent practice; students engage in advanced health assessment and diagnostic reasoning skills and are recognised as having advanced nursing knowledge to provide consultancy services to health providers; for those nurses wishing to gain registration in the UK, the overseas nurses programme is offered as an additional unit; this is a unique opportunity to gain both higher level qualifications and UK registration as a nurse.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a good UK Honours degree or equivalent and we recommend that applicants should have at least 1 year's post-qualifying experience before commencing the Students should hold a professional qualification as a healthcare professional. Applicants whose 1st language is not English require IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum 5.5 in each component) or equivalent.

Course modules

Compulsory modules include: advancing healthcare practice (concepts and principles); dissertation (systematic review approaches of the literature); evidence based healthcare practice; global healthcare perspectives. Optional modules include: cancer care for nurses and allied health professionals; human factors and safer care; long term conditions (an integrated approach); sickle cell and thalassaemia (an integrated care approach); transforming healthcare through effective leadership.

Assessment methods

Combination of portfolios; learning contracts; exams; practicals; essays; reports; poster presentations.
