Media Arts

This course offers students the chance to pursue topic-based research under the guidance of a supervisor with relevant expertise; this can be a theoretical dissertation or a practical project (accompanied by a theoretical research rationale). Normally applicants have a clear idea of their proposed topic and approach when they apply, although they are welcome to seek advice.

Entry requirements

Degree (minimum 2.2) or a postgraduate qualification in media studies or the equivalent; a suitably high standard of English is required.

Course modules

Currently staff expertise is available for dissertation supervision include: Cinema (international cinema, especially Italian cinema and German cinema, science fiction, special effects, psychoanalysis and the cinema, independent film and video, philosophy); news and journalism; representation (gender, ethnicity, and class, national identities, representations of the city, sport); fiction (popular fiction, literary adaptation, television drama); publishing (histories of publishing and readership, the e-book and e-publishing); the media industry (new technologies, digitalisation and convergence, globalisation and the media industry, commercial sponsorship); philosophical issues in the media; for production work, the school can consider work in the following areas: digital media production (web-based applications, DVD, CD-Rom, mobile internet); video (documentary, drama and experimental); radio (documentary and drama); photography (digital and chemical); animation (Maya 3d computer, 2d computer model animation); creative writing; performing arts; computer games.

Assessment methods

Theoretical dissertation or a practical project (accompanied by a theoretical research rationale).
