Creative Writing

This course brings students together who are working in different genres in order that they might engage collaboratively across genres before specialising (in screenwriting, playwriting, fiction or poetry) for their dissertations; it is appropriate for those who want to pursue a career in the creative industries (from editing to media) and for students who wish to pursue their academic studies to doctoral level.

Entry requirements

Applicants need either of the following: Honours degree in English with elements of creative writing (2.1 or higher); or Honours degree in English (2.1 or higher) supported by a creative writing portfolio; or an alternative Honours degrees (2.1 or higher) containing distinct elements of literary and/or film studies, and supported by a creative writing portfolio, will be considered; English language proficiency suitable for this level of study.

Course modules

Core modules: creative writing: research skills 1: theories and practice; creative writing research skills 2: theories, models, self; poem as story, story as poem; intertextuality: story, genre, craft; editing as collaborative practice.
Optional module: choose 1 from: contemporary literary cultures: politics; Victorian modernity: 1880-1910; writing revolutions: politics, publics and professionalism in literary culture, 1580-1700; alternatively, students may choose an optional module from outside their discipline from other areas of the college or university.
