Research interests of staff include: Popular culture, Yoruba language, oral literature and religion; African and Caribbean literature, postcolonial British literature, Caribbean film and music; social change, gender, development; rural development, conservation and environment; Cabo Verde, Guinea Bissau region, diaspora, creolization, imperialism, race and slavery; history and politics with special reference to Nigeria; history and politics with special reference to South Africa; history and education with special reference to Ghana.
A good Honours degree or overseas equivalent; Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) is available; those with non-standard qualifications should contact the University to discuss their application; English language proficiency suitable for this level of study.
The MA by Research programme requires you to prepare a dissertation of up to 40,000 words on a topic of your choice, for which an academic staff member will provide expert supervision. The PhD leads to a dissertation of up to 80,000 words on a subject of your choice and under the expert supervision of an academic member of staff.
British students are sometimes funded by Arts and Humanities Research Board, the ESRC or Leverhulme Foundation; sources of finance for overseas students include government or state scholarships, Commonwealth scholarships (organised through British Council) and secondment from employment; well-qualified applicants may be considered for University and School scholarships or for 1 of 4 Centre of West African Studies' (CWAS) bursaries awarded each year; CWAS also has limited funds to support graduate students' travel expenses arising from field work or library research.
