Renaissance, Reformation and Early Modern Studies

This programme combines the approaches of religious, social, cultural and political historians to take a fresh look at the reformations in Britain and Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries; it is taught by scholars whose expertise covers the cultural and religious landscape of the pre-reformation church, New World discoveries, the Catholic reformation in Europe and the political and cultural worlds of 16th and 17th century England.

Entry requirements

A good Honours degree or overseas equivalent; Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) is available; those with non-standard qualifications should contact the University to discuss their application; English language requirements may apply for international students.

Course modules

The British and European reformations, which focuses thematically on the content of the new ideas, the cultural practices that developed out of these, and their social and political impacts; it covers a diversity of topics ranging from ideas about tolerance and intolerance, and the material culture of clothing, to religious riot and the effects of the puritan revolution; a 2nd module is chosen from the following: The English church in the reign of Henry VIII; radical belief in Britain and early modern Europe; the age of Mary Queen of Scots; catholic reform in early modern Europe; and the English civil war and local society.

Assessment methods

15,000-word dissertation.
