West Midlands History

The course is aimed particularly at those interested in the history of the West Midlands region; it does not aim for a complete century-by-century coverage but rather allows students to acquire an in-depth knowledge of a series of major themes.

Entry requirements

A good honours degree or equivalent.

Course modules

Major themes covered include: town and country in the West Midlands, 1050-1300; reformation, social change and the Civil War: the West Midlands in the 16th and 17th centuries; enlightenment, reform and industry (the West Midlands in the 18th and 19th centuries); turmoil and change (economy, society and politics in the West Midlands in the 20th century).

Assessment methods

Students take 3 modules per year, each of which are assessed by a 4,000-word dissertation. Applicants also complete a 15,000 word dissertation on a topic of their choice.
