Cuneiform and Ancient Near Eastern Studies
This programme provides an introduction to the Akkadian and Sumerian languages and to the cuneiform script within the context of the history and culture of the ancient Near East. It comprises a major individual research project, supervised by a specialist in the field of study, and taught modules. During this programme you will acquire a knowledge of the two key languages of the ancient Near East, Sumerian and Akkadian. This will enable you to work with texts in the original. Instruction in some of the lesser known languages of the ancient Near East may also be provided, as well as comparative Semitics, and seminar work on the history and culture of the ancient Near East is available as an option.
Applicants will typically have a background in studying the history of this era.
