Cuneiform and Ancient Near Eastern Studies

This programme provides an introduction to the Akkadian and Sumerian languages and to the cuneiform script within the context of the history and culture of the ancient near east. It comprises a major individual research project, supervised by a specialist in the field of study, and taught modules. The programme is made up of 60 credits of taught modules and 120 credits achieved through a 20,000 word supervised research project on an ancient near eastern topic. During this programme students will acquire a knowledge of the 2 key languages of the ancient near east, Sumerian and Akkadian. This will enable students to work with texts in the original. Instruction in some of the lesser known languages of the Ancient Near East may also be provided, as well as comparative Semitics, and seminar work on the history and culture of the ancient near east is available as an option.
