Music (Critical Musicology pathway)

This course aims to equip the student with core historical and analytical skills as well as the enabling to operate in a field that is broadly interdisciplinary. At the heart of this pathway is the thinking about music module. This is a historically oriented module in aesthetics, whose raison d'être lies in the conviction that, if musicologists are truly to benefit from reading theory, they first need a solid grounding in the philosophical tradition from which its most significant writers stem.

Entry requirements

2.1 Honours degree in a relevant subject. IELTS: 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any band; TOEFL IBT: 88 overall with no less than 21 in reading, 20 in listening, 22 in speaking, 21 in writing; or PTE Academic 59 in all 4 skills. Alternatively students can satisfy the English language requirement by taking and successfully completing one of our English courses for international students.

Course modules

Core modules: aesthetics and the philosophy of art; musicology research seminar; information skills and resources in music; introduction to music research.
Optional modules: sound in society; special study in music; contemporary music studies; techniques of music editing; British music studies.
