Philosophy of Health and Happiness

This programme focuses on the growing field of happiness and its overlap with health and wellbeing asking questions such as what is happiness and what is health. Students study how illness affects our understating of what matters. The course covers views about death and mortality and how they affect how happy people are and how meaningful their lives are. This programme is aimed at graduates who have a background in philosophy, psychology, theology, health sciences, medicine or social sciences with a special interest in the philosophical issues concerning the notions of health, illness and disability, and the conditions for attaining happy and meaningful lives.

Entry requirements

The programme allows for multi-disciplinary entry. Applicants need an 2.1 Honours degree, or equivalent, in philosophy or other relevant subjects (theology, politics, psychology, English, etc.) or a joint Honours degree of which philosophy or another relevant subject is a component. English requirements are: IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any band, TOEFL 88 overall with no less than 21 in Reading, 20 in Listening, 22 in Speaking, 21 in Writing, or PTE Academic 59 in all 4 skills.

Course modules

On-campus: Research skills and methods; philosophy of health and happiness; God, freedom and the meaning of life. Students also take 3 optional modules from within School of Philosophy, Theology and Religion, the School of Psychology, or the Birmingham Law School. Distance learning: Research skills and methods; philosophy of health and happiness; God, freedom and the meaning of life; global bioethics; philosophy of cognitive science. Students also take a final optional module from outside of philosophy.

Assessment methods

Students complete 6 taught modules and a 15,000 word dissertation.
