Theology and Religion

This programme is designed to prepare students for professions which depend upon an advanced awareness of issues of theology and religion, and allow them to better appreciate the significance of these issues in contemporary society; students become critically acquainted with the sources of theology, such as scriptural writings, historical traditions and doctrinal issues, and students examine the importance of the sociological and cultural background; the programme also provides ideal preparation for further research.

Entry requirements

A 2.1 Honours degree in theology or a related discipline is normally required. English requirements are: IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any band, TOEFL 88 overall with no less than 21 in Reading, 20 in Listening, 22 in Speaking, 21 in Writing, or PTE Academic 59 in all 4 skills.

Course modules

Core module: Research methods. 5 optional modules from the following: Bible and sacred space; contemporary Sikh studies; contemporary Sufism movements; contemporary theology and the holy spirit; feminism in Islam; Hinduism, colonialism, nationalism; history of Christian Muslim relations; Islam in diaspora; Islamic philosophy; political Islam; problems of philosophical religion; religion and peacebuilding; religion in contemporary global politics; religious diversity; Sikh perspectives on interreligious relations; the Dead Sea Scrolls: texts and context.
15,000-word dissertation.

Assessment methods

Core modules are each assessed by an essay of up to 4000 words; students also complete a 15,000 word dissertation.
