Advanced Chemical Engineering (with options in Food Processing, Pharmaceutical Technology and Business Studies)

Chemical engineering now extends beyond its traditional roots in oil and gas processing. In this course students learn about the aspects of chemical engineering that deal with the design and development of formulated products such as food and pharmaceuticals. The programme has options in food processing, pharmaceutical technology and business studies. Chemical engineering is dynamic and evolving. It provides many solutions to problems facing industries in the pharmaceutical, biotechnological, oil, energy and food and drink sectors. It is vital to many issues affecting quality of life; such as better and more economical processes to reduce the environmental burden, and more delicious and longer lasting food due to the right combination of chemistry, ingredients and processing.

Entry requirements

A good 1st Class Honours degree or overseas equivalent; Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) is available; those with non-standard qualifications should contact the University to discuss their application; English language proficiency suitable for this level of study.

Course modules

Core modules: modern molecular biology; advanced techniques for material characterisation; interfacial physics and chemistry; structured fluids; molecular delivery. Optional modules: a wide range of optional modules enables students to gain specific knowledge relating to food and/or pharmaceutical product development; students may also choose to study business and management modules, or develop mathematical modelling skills.

Sponsorship information

Some students may receive BBSRC or EPSRC funding; other sources of funding are the Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP); the European Union and industrial funding for UK and EU students; international students can often gain funding through overseas research scholarships; Commonwealth scholarships or their home government.
