Advanced Mechanical Engineering

This programme offers graduates preparation for those wishing to undertake a PhD. It is a broad-based programme covering an important and industrially-relevant portfolio of mechanical engineering modules, such as biofuels and combustion, manufacturing processes, MEMS, and automation and robotics. This programme will be suitable for graduates of mechanical engineering or related subjects.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 2.2 Honours Degree in mechanical engineering or an equivalent qualification.

Research and professional skills; synoptic mechanical engineering; advanced project; optional; advanced mechanics; advanced robotics; advanced thermal systems; advanced vehicle engineering; biofuels and combustion; bio-medical engineering; computational geometry; laser-based manufacturing; micro and nano technologies; process modelling; R and D in manufacturing processes; intelligent systems; machining support systems.

Assessment methods

100 per cent continuous assessment, comprising: 1 project report based on in-depth research into a set subject (70 per cent) and presentation of the work (30 per cent).
