Urban and Regional Planning

This programme is designed to develop students as reflective practitioners in the planning profession and related disciplines in the built environment; the structure enables students to combine the core modules and material in spatial planning with a specialist focus in fields such as urban regeneration, community based planning, economic development, housing and transport planning.

Entry requirements

A good Honours degree or equivalent; for a Graduate Diploma applicants should have a degree or diploma or equivalent qualification in an appropriate field; Graduate Diploma students who achieve Master's level in their modules may be transferred to the Master's level; English language requirements may apply for international students.

Course modules

The political economy of cities and regions; planning methods and techniques; the planner in contemporary society; introduction to spatial planning; urban property development; sustainable cities; place making and urban design; integrated planning project. Optional modules: Urban regeneration and renewal; towards urban renaissance: community involvement in the built environment; economic development; resilience, energy and urban living.

Assessment methods

A dissertation of 15,000 words.

Sponsorship information

CURS has a limited number of bursaries (paid at ESRC rates) for research students, normally awarded to full-time UK / EU students; CURS also has a fund (the Pat Cam Award) to help students take part in conferences and fieldwork; we also have one scholarship for international students of outstanding merit applying for a PhD: the Barbara M.D. Smith Scholarship; this provides the difference between the tuition fee for a home / EU postgraduate students and the international postgraduate student fee; the scholarship is tenable for one year, and renewable for a second and third year subject to satisfactory progress.
