Biomedical Ethics

Research interests in MESH (medicine, ethics, science and history) are broad. Current funded research projects (including PhD studentships) are underway in the following areas: transition to fatherhood; directed and conditional organ donation; post-separation family life and shared residence; research ethics; telecare; the allocation of human eggs for reproductive purposes; the best interests of children; ethical issues relating to polio vaccination; research ethics during emergencies; the ethics of trials using genetically modified mosquitoes; the ethics of libertarian paternalism; global health security; ethics of population blood research. We have the relevant expertise and are keen to supervise projects using a variety of approaches including philosophical methods (focused on discussion of arguments and the analysis of concepts and issues in policy and practice) as well as the use of empirical bioethics methodologies, in particular those that include qualitative methods. We are also interested in mixed methods research beyond traditional bioethics and would be willing to co-supervise the ethical dimensions of more clinical or epidemiological projects, as well as projects that combine ethics and the history of medicine.

Entry requirements

Attainment of an Honours degree (normally a 1st or Upper 2nd Class Honours degree or equivalent) in a relevant subject awarded by an approved university, or attainment of an alternative qualification or qualifications and/or evidence of experience judged by the University as indicative of an applicant's potential for research and as satisfactory for the purpose of entry to a research degree programme. Admission and registration for a research degree programme may be conditional on satisfactory completion of preliminary study, which may include assessment. In some cases applicants also need to have completed a Master's degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject. English requirements are: IELTS 7.0 with no less than 6.5 in any band, TOEFL 95 overall with no less than 22 in any band, or PTE Academic 67 in all 4 skills.
