Secondary Education (Biology)
Like the PGCE the PGDipEd leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) but it also offers 120 credits at Master�s level; thus following satisfactory completion of this course, plus a successful induction year in school and references, students can return to complete an MEd in Teaching Studies; the course prepares students for life as a science teacher, with a specialism in biology; the course develops students� skills and abilities in understanding the complexities which surround the teaching and learning of science; the subject knowledge and the pedagogy; students develop as a reflective teacher who considers carefully the choices in how to teach biology and makes informed decisions about how they work best with students.
Degree or equivalent qualification of which at least 50 per cent is biology relevant to the National Curriculum; in addition to this applicants are required to have a grade C in GCSE mathematics and English, or equivalent, on application; applicants should also have 2 science A-levels, and a good pass in GCSE science; students must also provide a satisfactory medical form; complete an enhanced CRB or police check, including registration with the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA); complete a declaration of Suitability to Teach; adhere to a Code of Professional Conduct and Fitness to Practise.
The course consists of 5 phases: preparation (university and some school-based activities); school placement 1 (7 week placement in school); development (university and 1 week in a 2nd school); school placement 2 (12 week block placement and some university days); completion (2 further weeks in 2nd school and 2 weeks in university).
Assessment is via a number of methods including: written assignments; 2 teaching placements; the Teachers' Standards for the Award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS); the course is assessed at Master's level and successful completion awards 120 credits.
