Secondary Education (Modern Foreign Languages, Spanish with French)
Like the PGCE the PGDipEd leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) but it also offers 120 credits at Master�s level; thus following satisfactory completion of this course, plus a successful induction year in school and references, students can return to complete an MEd in Teaching Studies; students are shown how theory and practice are interdependent and move each other forward to guide the student to become a reflective teacher who learns from research, everyday practice, colleagues and pupils; students on the course look at a wide range of educational themes such as: the use of the target language; the importance of planning; the role of grammar; behaviour management; assessment; motivation; differentiation; equal opportunities and educational needs, and link these with government guidance in England; students are expected to participate in all the sessions through group work, interactive activities and discussions.
Degree or equivalent qualification of which at least 50 per cent is modern foreign languages relevant to the National Curriculum; all candidates are expected to have spent about a year in a country where the target language is spoken; foreign applicants need to be familiar with the English school system; it is preferable to offer 2 languages; in addition to this applicants are required to have a grade C in GCSE mathematics and English, or equivalent, on application; students must also provide a satisfactory medical form; complete an enhanced CRB or police check, including registration with the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA); complete a declaration of Suitability to Teach; adhere to a Code of Professional Conduct and Fitness to Practise.
There are 5 phases: preparation (university, some school-based activities including some primary teaching); school placement 1 (7 week placement in school with tutor visit and 1 day at the university); development (university, some activities such as teaching on an intensive post 16 day, 1 week in a 2nd school); school placement 2 (12 week block placement with tutor visits and some university days); completion (2 further weeks in a 2nd school and 2 weeks at the university).
Assessment is via a number of methods including: written assignments; 2 teaching placements; the Teachers' Standards for the Award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS); the course is assessed at Master's level and successful completion awards 120 credits.
