Political Science (Research Methods)

This programme offers students the chance to develop an advanced theoretical and research-based training, especially interesting for students wishing to pursue further postgraduate studies; it is recognised by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) as a 1+3 programme.

Entry requirements

A good Honours degree or its equivalent; for those whose 1st language is not English, a TOEFL or IELTS Certificate is required; entry at Graduate Diploma level is possible for those with a reasonable 1st degree; Graduate Diploma students can upgrade to the Master's on satisfactory examination performance.

Course modules

Core modules: developments in contemporary political analysis; social research methods i; social research methods ii; research design; introduction to social science research; dissertation ma students to submit a 13,500 word dissertation (not applicable to diploma students). Optional 20 credits from: contemporary themes and issues in British politics; terrorism and political violence; politics and the state; global ethics 1; global ethics 2; theory and ethics of terrorism and political violence; ethical dimensions of terrorism, political violence and war; democracy, power and citizenship; social theory and critique: contested knowledge; social theory: from Marxism to post Marxism; revolution and enlightenment (political ideas a); totalitarianism and the state (political ideas b); migration, superdiversity, policy and practice (iass); globalisation, international migration and citizenship (iass).

Assessment methods

Dissertation.
