International Relations (Security)

This programme offers students an understanding of the wide-ranging nature of security studies, an appreciation of the historical importance of security issues, and an insight into future problems and debates that will affect the stability of the 21st century world order; former students have gone on to work in many varied careers, including with the Red Cross, the United Nations, Volunteer Service Overseas, and the foreign and defence ministries of many countries; issues examined include: the changing meaning of security and of what issues are considered to be security issues; critical security studies; explanations of war, deterrence and balance of power theories; alliance formation and management, and collective security; arms races and arms control, coercion and military intervention.

Entry requirements

A good Honours degree or its equivalent; for those whose 1st language is not English, a TOEFL or IELTS Certificate is required.
