Public Management (Local Policy and Leadership)

This course aims to build knowledge, skills and confidence for careers in the public service; it is suitable for both experienced practitioners from the public and voluntary sectors and those wishing to embark on a career in public service; students develop their understanding of democratic governance and the challenges to improving performance and co-ordinating and managing public services and governmental processes; they reflect on the changing demands affecting public organisations locally, regionally, nationally and internationally, building their knowledge base, leadership skills and self-confidence.

Entry requirements

Good Honours degree in a relevant subject.

Course modules

Compulsory core modules: public management; community and local governance; participation and democracy; strategic commissioning; performance management; dissertation. Students focus in depth on a topic of particular interest, with support from a dissertation supervisor (msc only). Optional modules: regulation and finance; leadership; making policy; managing people; overview and scrutiny; public services procurement and contracting; strategic commissioning.
