Development and Project Planning

This programme will enable you to develop an in-depth understanding of a range of approaches to development planning and economic policy issues, with a thorough training in techniques for the planning, design and economic analysis of development projects and programmes. There is a strong emphasis on issues and analytical techniques relating to choices in project design, and cost-benefit analysis. Issues related to sustainability, policy analysis and institutional factors that affect policy design and its implementation are also studied.

Entry requirements

An undergraduate degree (2.2 Honours or above) UK system or comparative result if outside UK. We also give serious consideration to applicants with non-traditional backgrounds and take relevant social science work experience into consideration. Level of English required for non-native speakers: IELTS at 6.0 or the equivalent (with sub-tests not lower then 5.5).

Course modules

Modules include: project finance and appraisal; project appraisal and economic analysis; public policy analysis and management; dissertation in development and project planning. Option modules: economic growth and development; issues in development theory; organisations and capacity enhancement; project planning and management 1; finance for development; human resource management and development; international economics; issues in development policy; project planning and management 2.

Assessment methods

Dissertation.

Recognised by ESRC for pool awards; overseas students tend to be funded by the British Council, World Bank, European Union, employer or other aid organisations.
