International Development Management
This course provides students with the critical and analytical skills to enable them to operate effectively in international development environments. Covering macro and micro level perspectives, the course offers rich insights into the challenges of contemporary development theory, policy and management. The course is structured around the compulsory core modules of International Development Theory and International Development Policy, with flexibility built in through the optional course units chosen by students to meet their own objectives and interests.
Good Honours degree in social science subject normally required; degree is designed for professionals in governments, non-governmental organisations, international development agencies, public and private enterprises, and those who have an interest in public action for development, civil servants and academics; relevant work experience may be taken into account; for candidates whose 1st language is not English, IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 550 (220 computer-based TOEFL) required.
Core course: issues in development theory; issues in development policy; plus additional option courses, and a dissertation; course provides students with the conceptual framework for the analysis of policy through analysing ideas about neoliberalism, globalisation, the role of states, markets and civil society, post- and alternative development; also considers various approaches to promoting pro-poor growth including supporting sustainable livelihoods, participation, building social capital, gender equality, empowerment, infrastructure and services, environment and conservation.
Recognised by ESRC for pool awards; overseas students tend to be funded by the British Council, World Bank, European Union, employer and other aid organisations.
