Middle East Politics and Security Studies

This programme addresses the on-going Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the various peace initiatives launched to try and bring an end to that conflict, the end of the Lebanese civil war and the fragile peace that has followed the war to 'liberate' Iraq and topple Saddam Hussein. It also examines the rise of Al Qaeda and the proliferation of Islamist groups affiliated to it, operating far beyond the borders of the Middle East, the spate of popular uprisings calling for democracy in parts of North Africa and the Middle East popularly known as the Arab Spring and the fall-out of these rebellions both politically and socially in Egypt and Syria. The course focuses on these themes and traces their origins historically in an effort to offer a much deeper level of understanding of social and political developments and broader security implications in this troubled region that have had - and continue to have -ramifications for peoples and governments far beyond the Middle East.
