Mental Health Studies

The course introduces students to the theory and practice of mental health social work; in particular it explores: models of mental distress; risk and evidence based decision making; mental health law; partnerships in mental health; and values and ethics in mental health; the course is taught alongside students training to be approved mental health professionals (AMHPs) and students have the benefit of participating in practice workshops with a range of mental health practitioners; much of the course is taught by way of case studies, experiential learning and group discussion rather than didactic lectures.

Entry requirements

A previous degree at 2.2 or above; English language at IELTS 6.5 or above; some knowledge and/or experience of social or health care would be beneficial though not essential.

Course modules

Law, policies and procedures (and amhp role) (20 credits) (c); mental distress/mental health difficulties: models for practice (20 credits) (c); risk: evidence-based decision making and communication (20 credits) (c); partnership working in mental health (20 credits) (c); values and ethics (and amhp role) (20 credits) (c); supervising, supporting and developing staff (20 credits) (o); best interest assessment/deprivation of liberty safeguards (o); any other m-level 20-credit module relevant to mental health practice, negotiated with and approved by the programme director (o); master's dissertation in mental health practice (60 credits) (c).

Assessment methods

The course is taught in blocks between October and March and is assessed through essays, case studies, examination and course work; online activities and support are an integral part of the course and students are expected to participate in these.
