Performance and Visual Practices

The course is an interdisciplinary programme that facilitates practical and theoretical research across different fields of enquiry, whilst providing links to a network of local and national arts agencies and venues; the course reflects a contemporary visual culture in a state of flux, marked by a shift away from discrete disciplines and familiar dialogues towards a culture of expanded and interdisciplinary practices, such as live art, site-specific performance, sound installation, screendance, music composition and performance; supported by a programme that brokers innovation and stakes out new perceptual territories, students are encouraged to explore new professional methods of working; input from leading artists from a range of disciplines ensures that students are conversant with emerging trends in contemporary art, whilst contextual studies provide an understanding of the historical precedents from which they emerge and a critical framework for their own work; situated within a thriving cultural community, and within easy reach of London's abundant variety of arts events, the university of Brighton provides an ideal setting for postgraduate study; whilst promoting rigorous intellectual enquiry and an ethos of radical, speculative experimentation, the course also facilitates strong links with professional cultural practice, providing insights into industry practices, career routes and vocational opportunities.

Entry requirements

Normally, an Honours degree in arts-related subjects; applicants demonstrating the equivalent skills and experience may be considered. Seasoned artists and practitioners whose fields of research might embrace science, philosophy and ecology, and who wish to re-examine their practice within a critically supported frame of reference, are encouraged to apply.
